NEW YORK – The process of recording the new album from Matchbox Twenty was something like living in a frat house – with tons of red wine instead of beer.

While the creation of “North” – and living together in Nashville – vocalist Rob Thomas jokes that the quartet ” spent, like, $ 40,000 Fair wine in the wine. “.
At 5, 6:00, we break for dinner and things would go south,” said Thomas, 40, said in a recent interview. “And we thought it was amazing, everything we were doing was awesome, and we would come back and we find some new band in downtown Nashville and bring them back to the studio …

and play all this crap. Know who you away go, ‘Dude, the new album by Matchbox Twenty will suck! ‘“
None of these songs made it into the “North” album – which may be part of the reason that debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200 albums last week after selling 95,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The rockers recorded the album, their first release since the 2007 compilation album “Exile on Mainstream”, in New York, Los Angeles and “forest” of Nashville. They had not lived together as they do when they recorded their debut platinum 12 times 1996 “yourself or someone like you.”
But they said reunification was “natural” and the musicians began writing material while Thomas toured his second solo album in 2009. Paul Doucette, drummer of the band, said they recorded 60 songs, and selecting the final tracks was tedious.
” We became very overwhelmed with the material and really the amount of different directions (we could) have with the material,” he said. “Within these 60 songs was an American record, there was a pop album, and was a rock.”
Thomas added: “Not to mention you pass out and you wake up the next day and someone would come and be like, ‘ I became a ragtime record!”
The Grammy nominated band – which includes guitarist Kyle Cook and bassist Brian Yale – said to be in Nashville influenced his sound, even though they got rid of him towards the end: “It’s like they decided it was not the disc we were doing.”
The album’s first single, the cheerful “She’s so bad,” is an outlet for the rock band, best known for the hits “Unwell “, “3 AM” and ” Bent .”

” Our songs are lyrically a bit heavier and not as many types of tongue in cheek lyrics, and it was kinda nice to come out with something that is not our typical (sound),” Doucette said the Top 40.
There is also “Put Your Hands Up”, an upbeat song about a girl who wants to escape his tough week in the dance floor.
“At the time I wrote the line ‘ Leave your heart on the dance floor “I ‘m like,’ I ‘m going there! I go there ‘, “a smiling Thomas said, as Doucette laughed.
